WSJ has some pretty cool !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! posted. There are different ones showing how much faster the 500m has gotten since 1922, how altitude affects the times and comparing the Sochi times to the top 20 all time records. Well worth clicking through the link and wasting a few minutes of your Tuesday if you ask me.

That was neat. For me, the first one was most interesting, showing how much faster the racers have gotten since 1924. I was watching the ski jumping on the normal hill (what is the taller one, the Big Ass hill?), and trying to remember how they did it before the V-shaped ski position. Skis together, slightly off to one side. Science has triumphed in this event also.

Yeah, its crazy in any sport how much things change. I play hockey and downhill ski. Hockey sticks have gone from $25 heavy, inconsistent and disposable wood to $100+ graphite composite wonders that last for a season or more. For everyone who complains about how expensive sticks are, I used to go through 5-6 a season at $25 each. The last sticks I bought were ~$125 and last over a season.

My downhill skis are all pretty old and it is crazy comparing them to the new skis. I've got a pair from 04 that at the time were about as fat as you could get a pair of skis. I've got another pair from 07ish that was considered a mid fat and they are almost as wide as the 04's. Compare either of those to a current year ski and it crazy how wide the new skis are, never mind the updated sidecuts and rocker and such.
